Day #3 of our safari was to Lake Naivasha. Lake Naivasha is a fresh water lake & the town of Naivasha is on the shores of the lake. It has a lot of bird life associated with the lake as well as a sizeable population of hippos which is why we were on the lake...
Floriculture is the main industry around the lake. We could see polyhouses (basically massive greenhouses made out of polyethylene) all around the lake. Floriculture is Kenya's third largest foreign income earner after tourism & tea. And the flowers you can get here are amazing & dirt cheap too. A bunch of roses here (about 18 stems) will cost you KES200 which is about $2.50!
This is where we launched from.
Our tour guide Jumah & Zara sat up the front.
Almost immediately after launching we saw hippos.
The lake apparently keeps rising... And it also seems to be getting overgrown by what look like water hyacinth. In places there are lawns of it...
Hippos!
We got off at the edge of the lake & walked around to see some of the wildlife there.
Zoe loves using the binoculars. In fact, our neighbour Eric lent us a pair & Jumah had a pair too, so most of the safari was spent with Zane & Zoe fighting over the binoculars and trying to swaps the ones they were using for the other one...
Zebras & waterbucks. We also saw giraffes...
The amazing thing here is that there are peoples houses in the background. These houses back onto land that backs onto the lake. Giraffes, zebras & waterbucks live on the land here & the hippos live in the water!
There was lots of bird life too.
We also had a bit of a crash too, well another boat crashed into our boat & lucky no one was tipped out. The driver of the boat wasn't looking where he was going very well as he had some dude up the front standing up & taking photos.
We set off for home & this time drove back to Nairobi taking the higher escarpment (we started the safari driving to Naivasha taking the lower escarpment). The view was awesome!
We will definitely do another safari again soon. Maybe next school holidays!
